A vanished sea has left its haunting line Inscribed upon the rocks that formed the shore. A somber cliff above the desert-floor Was long ago an island washed by brine. These tiny shells give undisputed sign Of life the prehistoric waters bore; But while the gleaming tides return no more, Resurging power flows in fresh design. For undulating flowers are like the waves That rippled golden under ancient moons Or shimmered rosy with a dawning's flush. The sands that white forget-me-not now laves Surround verbena's purple-dyed lagoons.
