COMMUNION, by IDA LEE ECHOLS First Line: The organ played a well-remembered strain Last Line: With god in peace, and felt at home. Subject(s): Eucharist; Communion | |||
The organ played a well-remembered strain -- I closed my eyes in habitual reverence, And, as I did so, the present was no more; I was transported miles away and backward through the years. In front of me were old, familiar faces, As I had seen them many times before Semi-circled in the choir-loft, And in the foreground was the worthy man of God, Whose voice I'd heard so often raised in prayer. My eyes unclosed -- the vision vanished. Resentfully, I saw the faces all were strange. I sat in nostalgic revery for a while, Then, looking closer at the faces around me, I perceived That, though different from my loved ones, yet They were cast in kindred mold, and I communed With God in peace, and felt at home. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BUGLER'S FIRST COMMUNION by GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS NO-MORE-FEAR by WILLIAM ROSE BENET SURSUM CORDA by MARGARET CARROLL BRADY ON CHURCH COMMUNION by JOHN BYROM HOLY COMMUNION by ADA CAMBRIDGE INTERLUDE by MARJORIE EASTWOOD DUDLEY SHADOWS by VICTOR GUSTAVE PLARR |
