PORTRAIT, by CLAIRE EMERSON First Line: You are my breath / ... By daylight Last Line: You've lied. Subject(s): Portraits; Pride; Self-esteem; Self-respect | |||
You are my breath, . . . by daylight Like pine-scented air . . . in moonlight Or a whispering breeze . . . that murmurs Soft words. Your eyes hold mine and . . . sing to me Of symphonies and music . . . great anthems Or tom-toms and weird savage rites . . . in jungles Far away. Again your soul flames forth . . . pure and white And bares my own in nakedness . . . to your view I cringe in fear and -- trembling . . . wonder what You see. Yet I do not mind . . . it's only pride That checks my lips and holds my tongue . . . in silence Perhaps I hope, but . . . hoping, fear You've lied. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ROCK AND HAWK by ROBINSON JEFFERS GODOLPHIN HORNE, WHO WAS CURSED WITH THE SIN OF PRIDE, AND BECAME A BOOT-BLACK by HILAIRE BELLOC PRIDE by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON THE THIN EDGE OF YOUR PRIDE: 1 by KENNETH REXROTH PRIMER LESSON by CARL SANDBURG HAEC FABULA DOCET by ROBERT FROST VICTIM OF HIMSELF by MARVIN BELL |
