PERFECTION, by RUTH SCOFIELD FARGO First Line: I swept my house of life and garnished it Last Line: Lo! Eight had entered in! Alternate Author Name(s): Fordyce, William, Mrs. | |||
I swept my house of life and garnished it, I looked it through with care, For fear my thought might miss some imp of sin Crouched low and hiding there. But all was clean and clear, as empty as A hollow globe of glass. I smiled, and turned me to my windows wide Watching the weary pass. But never once did I desire to shield, From sun or wind or rain, One soul. Or ask one in to rest, and wash All free from travel-stain. Time passed. Again I searched my house with care, Feeling secure from sin. Of spirits worse than all I'd known before, Lo! Eight had entered in! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...TO R.K. by JAMES KENNETH STEPHEN IN MEMORIAM A.H.H.: 30 by ALFRED TENNYSON AN ELECTIVE COURSE by THOMAS BAILEY ALDRICH TO REV.
