The charted skies star-strewn before him lay. He knew the stars as sailors know the sea He solved the problem of the long light ray; He knew how far each star, its melody. The universe grew older as he told the tale, And stars took on new meaning through his eyes He taught unchanging laws that must prevail -- Scorned old beliefs that science now denies. Alas, we miss his wisdom and the fire That makes for love of learning in all men; We miss the kindly soul that did not tire Whose mission was to teach by voice and pen.
