SONNET EXERCISE (1), by MARGARET HAYNES FOSTER First Line: From reach of time to vacant ends of space Last Line: The mortal bondage of your mouth and hand. | |||
From reach of Time to vacant ends of space I love you, and the sentient Spirit knows, Although the falling leaves are on its face What lies between the dog-star and the rose. And here amid the city you have stormed With gifts as treacherous as Trojan horse, Though burned and pillaged, tortured and re-formed Lives Beauty yet unwintered by remorse. And all your faithlessness shall not conspire To still the beating wings of love for you Whose godhood touched my head with coals of fire, Whatever else is false, these things are true: Although my soul ensnared could not withstand The mortal bondage of your mouth and hand. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...EPITAPHIUM CITHARISTRIAE by VICTOR GUSTAVE PLARR BELLS FOR JOHN WHITESIDE'S DAUGHTER by JOHN CROWE RANSOM HOLYHEAD, SEPTEMBER 25, 1727 by JONATHAN SWIFT WORK by MARGARET STEELE ANDERSON THE ARGONAUTS (ARGONATUICA): JASON'S SOWING AND REAPING by APOLLONIUS RHODIUS THE BLACK MOUSQUETAIRE; A LEGEND OF FRANCE by RICHARD HARRIS BARHAM |
