IDYLL, by MARION GOBLE First Line: The road was green, the road was lined Last Line: A mouth that's stained with kisses. | |||
I The road was green, the road was lined With greening berry bushes; I put my hand up to my mouth, My mouth was stained with kisses. You leaned above a willowed pool, The willow catkins scudded Between your hands; your hands were wet; You smiled into the water. II The chalk hill leaned against your cheek, We climbed above the roadway; The dry grass hushed about our knees To speed the hidden cricket. The world a stemless crumb of dust Behind us as we mounted -- A hawk was circling on the sea; The world stood out beyond us. III Crush the sickly hyacinths, Behind a stupid shutter, The letters and the ribbons fade And fades the moon that's waning. A charm is left to conjure with -- The sea, the scudding hawk, Green willow, pool, and hill of chalk, A mouth that's stained with kisses. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...DILIGENCE IS TO MAGIC AS PROGRESS IS TO FLIGHT by MARIANNE MOORE A SOLDIER LISTENS by JEAN STARR UNTERMEYER HUMPTY DUMPTY RECITATION [OR, SONG] by CHARLES LUTWIDGE DODGSON THE GRASSHOPPER AND THE CRICKET by JAMES HENRY LEIGH HUNT UNSOPHISTICATED WISHES, BY MISS JEMINA INGOLDSBY, AGED 15 by RICHARD HARRIS BARHAM SONG OF THE SATYRS TO ARIADNE by WILLIAM ROSE BENET MY DELIGHT by GAMALIEL BRADFORD AN EPISTLE THROWN INTO A RIVER IN A BALL OF WAX by WILLIAM BROWNE (1591-1643) |
