THIS CUP WILL PASS, by ELIZABETH HALL (1842-1920) First Line: O lord! How long will tyrants hold their sway Last Line: Blot out from time, and memory decay. | |||
O Lord! How long will tyrants hold their sway, How long will men be made to shape their lives As if from single mould; how long obey, Like human bees, the queen bees in their hives? Can tyrants tear the fabric of the world, And weave again a bolt of different hue; Can epithets most vile at God be hurled, And peaceful lands and happiness ensue? The reign of despots at the most is brief, And always has been since the world began; Democracy alone can chain the thief, And free the bonds of persecuted man. O Lord! Thy will be done. This evil day Blot out from Time, and memory decay. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE MAN IN THE MOON by JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY SONGS OF NIGHT TO MORNING: 2.
