VANISHED IMMUNITY, by JOSEPHINE INGRAM First Line: I had built high walls around my heart Last Line: I have no armor against kindliness. | |||
I had built high walls around my heart And armed myself against unpleasant words; Within my fortress, I had set apart Blue mountains and the sea and songs of birds. I thought myself serene, immune to life, Armed with indifference in my safe retreat, For surely, he who goes not forth to strife Need have no fear of suffering and defeat. I did not know a little friendly deed Could find a way into my walled-in heart, Could pierce me with a crying, human need, Until your words had made the swift tears start. This strange, new weapon finds me powerless; I have no armor against kindliness. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...STALKING BEAUTY by JOSEPHINE INGRAM YOU SAY YOU SAID by MARIANNE MOORE MIDDLE-AGED; A STUDY IN EMOTION by EZRA POUND APPROACH OF WINTER by WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS THE SLEEP by ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING TO HIS DYING BROTHER, MASTER WILLIAM HERRICK by ROBERT HERRICK A PRAYER, LIVING AND DYING by AUGUSTUS MONTAGUE TOPLADY |
