STERN TRUTH, by LETITIA ELIZABETH LANDON Poet Analysis Poet's Biography First Line: Life is made up of vanities - so small Last Line: And makes us feel that fate is terrible. Alternate Author Name(s): L. E. L.; Maclean, Letitia Subject(s): Vanity | |||
LIFE is made up of vanities -- so small, So mean, the common history of the day, -- That mockery seems the sole philosophy. Then some stern truth starts up -- cold, sudden, strange; And we are taught what life is by despair: -- The toys, the trifles, and the petty cares, Melt into nothingness -- we know their worth; The heart avenges every careless thought, And makes us feel that fate is terrible. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THROUGH A GLASS EYE, LIGHTLY by CAROLYN KIZER EPITAPH: FOR A PREACHER by COUNTEE CULLEN THE FLESH AND THE SPIRIT by ANNE BRADSTREET THE TENTH MUSE: THE VANITY OF ALL WORLDLY THINGS by ANNE BRADSTREET THE BISHOP ORDERS HIS TOMB AT SAINT PRAXED'S CHURCH by ROBERT BROWNING ALL IS VANITY, SAITH THE PREACHER' by GEORGE GORDON BYRON AGING: ON THE VANITY OF EARTHLY GREATNESS by ARTHUR GUITERMAN THE SPIDER AND THE FLY by MARY HOWITT CALYPSO WATCHING THE OCEAN by LETITIA ELIZABETH LANDON |
