I gazed upon the towers Of ancient Carcassonne Whose walls defied the flowers That sought to climb thereon. I strengthened all defenses In walls about my heart Lest love, with his pretenses, Should rend the stones apart. But like that ancient city, The drawbridge at the gate Is rising.
