CARCASSONNE, by
First Line: I gazed upon the towers
Last Line: If love should come too late!
Alternate Author Name(s): Meyer, Emma Voorhees
Subject(s): Carcassonne, France

I gazed upon the towers
Of ancient Carcassonne
Whose walls defied the flowers
That sought to climb thereon.

I strengthened all defenses
In walls about my heart
Lest love, with his pretenses,
Should rend the stones apart.

But like that ancient city,
The drawbridge at the gate
Is rising. What a pity
If love should come too late!
