SONG MAGIC, by FANNY HODGES NEWMAN First Line: It is dusk in the house of my heart Last Line: That I am no more afraid. | |||
It is dusk in the house of my heart Because of great fear; Because of foreboding and dread For this house that is ours. Where the lark nested And the dove, Vultures feed. I will go out among the flowers And take of the substance of the earth And make me a song for my need, And be heartened and rested. I will take mountains For strength; and for mirth I will take dew-beads and fountains. For glory, I will have only The manifold flush Of the sunset horizon, With the little white thread Of new moon that hangs lonely. Twined with its slenderness I will have stars For pledges of tenderness. Then in the hush Where no words are said, I will drain friendship From tall sweet trees. Yet, making my song, I recall That mountains are broken and scarred; That thunderbolts Shatter deep skies that are starred With white embers of conflict. I remember the moon, How she borrows the semblance of flame That lightens her cheek; And the trees, What storms they have weathered While birds took to wing From spilled nests that were tethered To up-standing branches in spring. And seeing all these Still brave and beguiling and glad, I write down their courage and sing And am strong. And now I lean my quaking heart On the poem I have made, And call earth to witness That I am no more afraid. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...DITTY IN IMITATION OF THE SPANISH: ENTRE TANTO QUE L'AVRIL by EDWARD HERBERT COQUETTE by THOMAS BAILEY ALDRICH THE HIRED MAN by EVA K.
