TO MY MUSE (WITH ACKNOWLEDGMENTS TO THE SHADE OF COLONEL LOVELACE), by
First Line: Deem me not fickle, in that I
Last Line: My bread-and-butter more!
Subject(s): Food & Eating; Lovelace, Richard (1618-1657); Muses; Survival

DEEM me not fickle, in that I
No more frequent thy shrine,
Not yet, reproachful, ask me why
I seldom pen a line.

Thy cult doth call for leisured hands,
And, since man must be fed,
A stern necessity demands
I earn my daily bread.

Yet this neglect doth no-wise prove
That thee I less adore,
But that, though true to thee, I love
My bread-and-butter more!
