What if the gold was heavy with alloy? You found it precious for awhile; its giving Seemed lordly in your sight; it brought you joy And glorified the ritual of living. What if illusion was a panderer Who rendered you impervious to reason? For such oblivion do not censure her Or call her artifice a name like treason. O wounded heart, be grateful that you had A single coin to spend, a single hour When earth and heaven combined to make you mad, A god, no miracle beyond your power!
