PATE M'QUATTY ON HIS FIDDLE, by JAMES SHAW First Line: O, I wouldna swap my auld fiddle Last Line: I've daylight wherever I go. Subject(s): Fiddles; Music & Musicians; Musical Instruments | |||
O, I WOULDNA swap my auld fiddle For a' the pianos I ken, Nor for the gilt-flute o' Tam Riddell, Nor the chanter and pipes o' Tam Glen. How it sets the fellows a-prancing, Like cowts when they're fed upon corn! How it rouses the lassies a-dancing Till the wee short hours o' the morn! My fiddle's a witch and a charmer, Its tongue is the tongue o' a lark, Its whispers as soft and as warm are As the whispers o' love in the dark. Its song's like the song o' a maiden, Its croon 's like the croon o' a dove, Its heart-strings are shaken and laden Wi' the innermost secrets o' love. Its wrath is the wrath o' a brither, When fechting for sisters at hame; It wails like the wail o' a mither, Its sob 's like the sobbing o' shame. Its glee is the glee o' a gossip, When the blithemeat's set down on the board; It exults like a slave that can toss off The fetters put on by his lord. Of baith sun and moon independent, If I mind but to rosin the bow; If "brig" and if "strings" be new mended, I've daylight wherever I go. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...DRUMS AND BRASS by DONALD (GRADY) DAVIDSON ONE AND ONE by CECIL DAY LEWIS VISITING SUNDAY: CONVENT NOVITIATE by MADELINE DEFREES SEVERAL MEASURES FOR THE LITTLE LOST by NORMAN DUBIE NEAR MISS HAIKU by ANSELM HOLLO THE PLAYER PIANO by RANDALL JARRELL A BANJO SONG by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON MARCUS AURELIUS ANTONINUS by JAMES SHAW SONNETS ON SAGES by JAMES SHAW NOBODY'S LOOKIN' BUT DE OWL AND DE MOON (A NEGRO SERENADE) by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON |
