FIELD QUILT, by
First Line: Late summer sends her mystic haze
Last Line: Makes dark gray ribbon for the binding.
Subject(s): Fields; Summer; Pastures; Meadows; Leas

Late summer sends her mystic haze
O'er all these charming August days;
On fields, she spreads a magic quilt
Of gay embroidery built;
A background there of darkest green --
Worked in flowers of lovely sheen --
Ironweed, sunflower and Queen Anne's lace --
Each one seems to have its place.
Here and there a primrose late,
Raises its head in gracious state,
And the dusty highway winding
Makes dark gray ribbon for the binding.
